Although summer is generally a time to relax and unwind, planning for vacations for the whole family or with a group of friends can be overwhelming. It’s especially difficult if your schedules don’t match or if it’s packed 6 days a week, such as mine. Over the years, I’ve found it surprisingly satisfying to gather some friends and step into our city’s backyard to explore all that it has to offer. This doesn’t mean you should toss away that trip to Hawaii out the window. But turn some of your days off into another kind of vacation, and you’ll find a new appreciation for the place you call home.
Here are some exciting events happening this month in Pioneer Square:
Pioneer Square Art Walk
This month, Gallery 4Culture airs artist Sean Barton’s Dirty Laundry, a narrative installation that meditates on the objects and events we cling to in our lives. Barton’s works function as a “memorial to the past, a record of the now, and a blueprint for the future,” inviting us to think through our own identities and relationships to material and experiences. July 5, 6-8 pm. Gallery 4Culture, 101 Prefontaine Pl S.
Boots with the Spurs: Pop Country Dance Party
It’s that time of year when all you want is to be wild and care-free, even for just one night. Grab your best dancing boots and head over to the Central Saloon where you can shake and sway to a thrilling pop-country playlist. July 7, 9 pm. Central Saloon, 207 First Ave S.
Hit the Streets Happy Hour Series
Everyone loves a good happy hour. And what better way to explore all the nooks and crannies of Pioneer Square than with a summer-long happy hour series? Join local businesses on every second Thursday of the month for specials on food, drinks, and shopping goodies. For your handmade jewelry fix, don’t forget to visit our FT store and receive a free gift with your purchase. July 12, 3-6 pm. Fresh Tangerine, 89 Yesler Way.
World Cup Viewing Party in Occidental Square
Catch the last weeks of the 2018 FIFA World Cup series on the big screen at Occidental Square. Live viewings are held on certain weekday mornings through July 15. So, bring your lunch and your friends, and join the Alliance for Pioneer Square and the Downtown Seattle Association in cheering for your favorite teams. June 15 – July 15, 11am. Occidental Square, 117 S Washington St.
Snap a #Selfie for Planned Parenthood
Selfie culture isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so why not use it for a good cause? Artist Holly Ballard Martz invites viewers to take a selfie in front of her piece, “Dangers of Nostalgia in Wallpaper Form (in utero),” and tag @HBallardMartz on Instagram. For each post, Martz will donate $5 (and up to $1k) to support Planned Parenthood. Until July 21. ZINC contemporary, 119 Prefontaine Pl S.
